Ranse Stoddard (Jimmy Stewart) wants to reign in some of the wildness of the Old West to make it safe for decent folk. In the town of Shinbone, that means making it safe from the likes of Liberty Valance, the town bully, villain... and killer. But Ranse isn't a sheriff, a marshal or even a gunslinger -he's just a lawyer fresh out of law school who refuses to even carry a gun. He thinks he can restrain the likes of Liberty Valance with nothing but his law books and his sense of justice.
Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) knows better, and also knows how to use a six-shooter. He's strong and tough but also a loner, so while Valance doesn't dare mess with Tom, Tom won't help the town rid themselves of Valance. The story hits its climax when Ranse realizes that while he has the will to fight Valance, he doesn't have the ability; and while Tom has the strength for the task, he doesn't care enough to do it.
