Instead of fleeing Hitler's oppression, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran minister, returned to his homeland to fight and suffer alongside his fellow Christians. But when he becomes involved in a plot to kill Hitler he has to wrestle with just what a Christian is and isn't allowed to do. This film is jumpy in parts, and doesn't do justice to Bonhoeffer's ethical struggles but it is still a good conversation starter. A word of warning: as Bonhoeffer is led off to his execution there is a brief shot of him naked from the back.
Those interested in a more thorough, but somewhat drier, treatment of Bonhoeffer's life should instead see the two-hour documentary Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Hanged on a Twisted Cross.
